Are you Really an Otaku?

Well, almost all of us in the internet are fans of Anime or Vocaloid. Who does not like them anyway? Yes we can say that there is few, but have you ever asked yourself if you're really SO OBSESSED in Anime? Do you consider yourself as an Otaku or are you the type of person that belongs to Weeaboos?

So what is an Otaku? What is a Weeaboo? What are their differences? Similarities between an Otaku to a Weeaboo?

Otaku is...

A Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly (but not limited to) anime and manga. The term otaku is most often equivalent to a "geek". However, it can relate to a fan of any particular theme, topic, hobby or any form of entertainment. The term otaku can be applied to both males and females. People who are referred to as otaku are judged for their behaviors and people suddenly see an otaku as a person unable to relate to reality. In Japan there has been some negativity towards otaku and its culture.

Weeaboo (a.k.a Wapanese) is...

A weeaboo is someone who loves to think that they can fit in with other Asians. Preferably, Japanese. What they don't understand is how fucked up they would look if they where to enter a normal Asian school or even walking the streets of an Asian city. Another aspect to weeaboo is the way they dress. They think adding random/colorful pieces of fabric and accessories is totally awesome. The only people who would think that it is would be another weeaboo. Another aspect is the way they use Japanese words. Examples like "Desu", "Kawaii", "Sugoi" and especially "Baka". There are other ones but they like to use them in their daily life and sometimes don't even know shit of the real meaning. To makes things short, a weeaboo is just a JAPANESE WANNABE but fail really badly at it.

Establishing distinctions between Otaku and Weeaboo can be kinda confusing, as both subcultures subscribe to a common set of interests (ex: anime/manga/gaming/cosplay) and share the social stigma of nurturing "unhealthy hobbyisms." but there are some obvious distinctions between the two.

Similarities:
  • Weeaboo and Otaku: Like Anime
  • Weeaboo and Otaku: Cosplay/Go to Anime Conventions
  • Weeaboo and Otaku: Have Figurines or Toys
  • Weeaboo and Otaku: Make fan arts

Differences between An Otaku and a Weeaboo:
  • Weeaboo: Can't be Asian.
  • Weeaboo: Say random Japanese words.
  • Weeaboo: Will try to look/act Japanese.
  • Weeaboo: Make up a Japanese sounding name for themselves.
  • Weeaboo: Think they know how to read/write Japanese and fuck up.
  • Weeaboo: Wear strange clothes in public.
  • Weeaboo: Will buy Japanese treats online or at stores (especially Pocky).
  • Weeaboo: Like to show off how stupid they look.

  • Otaku: Waste money on shit loads of anime stuff.
  • Otaku: Are often perverts.
  • Otaku: Like to keep things anime themed (such as avatars, signatures and desktop backgrounds).

Me? If you want to know whether I am an otaku or a weeaboo, As of now, I am neither but I am aiming to an otaku where I could share my insights and interests in a normal way. :D

Well there you have it. Sometimes, it is really hard to distinguish an otaku from a weeaboo. But there is one thing that I have in mind. Both are happy in their interest and we should at least respect that. If there is one thing that I could relate a lesson that I got from watching anime, is that we should always have to give respect to others if we want to be respected by the others too.
